The Institute for Communication and Leadership is a learning and development organization dedicated to the instruction of communication theory and practice. Our mission is to provide Utah State University and its surrounding communities with access to high quality, affordable learning and development seminars to strengthen individuals, families, and organizations.
Our programs offer what other organizations cannot: a dedicated focus on the theory and practice of communication based on decades of research and taught by award winning communication scholars.
Our Philosophy of Communication and Leadership
Regardless of your technical knowledge, professional experience, job skills, or position in an organization, your ultimate effectiveness depends on your ability to communicate well and develop strong relationships. The most important skills that employers seek in their workers are communication skills: to develop productive relationships, work well in teams, manage conflict, and create the trust necessary to be a leader.
If these skills are essential for the workplace, they are of even greater importance in our personal relationships, families, and communities. In all aspects of life, we are in great need of understanding communication more fully and more deeply. Indeed, the most pressing problems we face will require significant cooperation, understanding, and critical problem solving. Without the ability to effectively communicate and build strong relationships, solving such problems will be incredibly difficult.
Although people often recognize the importance of being a good communicator, most assume that communication is a simple, straightforward process, and that communication problems are largely the result of other peoples’ actions. As a consequence, few people take the time and effort to learn how to be an effective communicator. Instead, they rely on their own instincts and the examples of others. Given the constant communication problems that we experience in our families, workplaces, and communities, it is apparent that our instincts often do not serve us well.
To maximize your potential and improve the quality of your life, we invite you to learn how to be an effective communicator at The Institute for Communication and Leadership. Through instruction from communication scholars, you can learn how to:
* Develop self-awareness and awareness of others
* Gain a depth of knowledge about how communication works
* Understand when to appropriately and effectively use specific skills
Our goal is to provide you with a depth of knowledge and skills to enable you to wisely navigate communication problems and make them less difficult and more productive. With a deeper understanding of communication principles and practices, we hope to bring greater confidence, trust, understanding, collaboration, and integrity to personal, professional, and community relationships.
We invite you to participate in Professional learning and development seminars held Monday, May 10 – Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Seminars will be held at the Eccles Conference Center, Utah State University
